    Nation of Islam, African American movement and organization, founded in and known for its teachings combining elements of traditional Islam with black nationalist ideas. The Nation also promotes racial unity and self-help and maintains a strict code of discipline among members. The chapter analyzes pan-Islamism as a global movement for Muslim religious reform and against European imperial domination. It focuses on anti-colonial discourse and the activities of the leading pan-Islamic proponents, most notably the triad of Jamal al-Din al-Afghani, Muhammad ‘Abdu, and Muhammad Rashid Rida. It examines the anti-colonial discourses and activities of these men and shows.

    The findings presented in this book indicate that anti-Islamic initiatives in Western Europe and the United States form a transnational movement and subculture characterized by a fragile balance between liberal and authoritarian values.
